Forum: GratefulDead Subject: So, Just What ARE The BEST Shows of The 80's Then?

Lots of great 1985 posts thanks to Micah and others has me thinking well, just what are the best shows of the 80's? A quick over view I think shows the beginning of the decade and the end are where the meat lies on the bone - the middle is pretty thin and I mean, I have not listened to a 1986 show in like EVER...

Anyway here is a great place to start with a top ten list - which would include I think at least one of these Frost shows - the band is on and the sound is crisp SBD - Jerry in great voice with a couple of first sets that rival any of the decade... Great new tunes which we had not had in a few years - 1982 is where the dividing line starts to trend downward but here they bring the goods...

How 'bout the best "Esau"? ...kind memories of my brother permeate that song...we "grew up" on it through the 80's..He is now in China teaching English to Chinese Children...

I like the 80's actually s long as you stay away from the crusty center so my list is way too long.
Anyway when mining for 80's gems look to the Greeks, Rocks, SPACS and Hampton's. Also the the Meadowland, Centrums the Frost's and Alpines. not to mention the changing Spectrum's and flavor enhancing MSG's. Then there are Silver Stadiums and the Long Beach's and various other civic centers, arena's and coliseum's to delve into but when all goes wrong I usually sail to Maine where the vintage 80's Lobsta lives.

1980-11-26 I LOVE the Cold Rain And Snow 2nd set opener..
1987-05-10 Angry Bobby on "Desolation"..best ever I think..
1989-09-30 1st set includes: West LA Fadeaway, Queen Jane Approximately, Row Jimmy...One of the if not THE best West LA...
1989-07-19 A Killer Althea then Victim Or The Crime-> West L.A. Fadeaway, Desolation Row-> Deal Box Of Rain

1983-04-12 for the mellow keyboards on HSF...

Novelty:

1988-03-26 Not that the whole show is 5 starts but man "Stir it Up" is a real good time (wish they would have done more Marley..Johnny was a Good Man" would be a great Bobby song)

5-10-87 for real? Jerry sounds about as bad vocally as he ever did. I mean it's down right Donna embarrasing

7-19-89 is pretty killer though

Hampton shows (with a nod toward including Scope '82). Particularly '81, '83, '84, '88, '89

The Hampton shows give a great snapshot of the GD from year to year

Nowhere near a sellout, maybe 5/9, sweet night after a hot and humid August day in the Mo-Kan.
Lots of folks missed a real treat.

not a huge 80's fan for the most part. Looks like most people are going for 81, 80 has some smoking good shows too. I'll throw a few out there, can't say they're the best as I havent heard a fraction of what some of you nut cases have. These are probably obvious but these are some I dig

I even know about that Sept, 87 show...was it one of the ones Dire always talked about? I think I even own a copy, hidden away somewhere (I'll deny it, of course).

Hope the fam's preparing for killer mossies and blkflies!

well you should have a copy of something from that 91 Oakland run man. Talk about a blast from the past with the old feel with Gary Duncan. Chip is the guy you always think about but Duncan laid it down!

No flies this year and so far the mosiquitos have been mild. Hope all is well with you.

I just love this show, but sound quality (which does improve after the first three numbers) lets it down. If you stick with it there's some astonishing music here http://www.archive.org/details/gd1981-10-19.sbd.miller.95781.sbeok.flac16

Those would definitely have to be on a Top 10, IMO! Along with 5/16/81.

What else hasn’t been mentioned? Some of these could be contenders:

1980: 9/3, 9/4, 10/10, 10/31, 11/29, 12/6 is very cool little acoustic benefit

1981: 9/11 (9/12 already mentioned), 10/16, 12/31

Summer ’82: highlights include 8/3/82, 8/7/82 (DP 32), 8/10/82

Fall ’83: highlights include 9/2/83, 10/14/83 (DP 6), 10/15, 10/17, 10/31

10/12/84 ... not mentioned here yet?

Micah's going through the '85 contenders, and later 80s seem covered pretty well here ... I'm sure there are others, but those are some I like. (Among those that haven't been mentioned.)

Personal favorite 8/21/80 - but thats cause I love the Uptown Theatre Chicago. Great venue, the boys love to play there too.
